Announcements and Reminders for Thursday, May 16, 2019:

For the test --
Notice that you will be asked this:
What similarities and differences do you see between the Greek gods and goddesses and the Norse gods and goddesses?  How are their world-views different?  Are the creatures similar or different?

About the humans:
The first human man was Ask and he was made from an Ash Tree.
The first human woman was Embla and she was made from the Elm Tree.

Before the battle of Ragnarok, two people, Lif “a woman” and Liftraser “a man”, will find shelter in the sacred tree Yggdrasil. And when the battle is over, they will come out and repopulate the earth again.

Creation Myth  -- Fill in the Blanks

The nine realms of Yggdrasil are
  1. Asgard, the home of the Aesir.
  2. Vanaheim, where the Vanir live.
  3. Alfheim, where the light elves live.
  4. Midgard is the world of women and men.
  5. Jotunheim, where the giants wander and live and have their halls.
  6. Svartalfheim, where the dwarves, who are also known as dark elves, live beneath the mountains and build their remarkable creations.
  7. Niflheim, the dark ice world where the frost giants and Nidhogg the dragon live.
  8. Muspelheim, the world of flame, where Surt waits.
  9. Helheim, the place named for its ruler, where the dead go who did not die bravely in battle.

Loki's Punishment
After the Æsir had captured Loki, they wanted to revenge Baldr’s death. So they dragged Loki to a cave, where they took three large flat stones and place them on their edges and made a hole through them.
The Æsir then caught Loki's sons,  Vali and Narfi. They used magic and transform Vali into a wolf, who then ripped apart his own brother Narfi. The Gods then took his guts and used them to bind Loki who was then placed on top of the three stones. The Gods used magic yet again and the guts became as strong as iron.
Then Skadi took a poisonous snake and placed it above Loki so that it’s poison drips on to his face. Loki’s wife Sigyn loved him so much that she decided to stay with him, and Sigyn still sits to this day holding a bowl above Loki’s head to catch the poison from the snake.
Every time the bowl is full, she leaves to pour out the poison, and at that moment the poison drips on to Loki’s face which makes him shake violently in pain, so the whole earth shakes, and that is the reason why we have earthquakes.

The treasures the dwarves made for the Gods were
  1. a solid gold wig for Sif,
  2. a small, shining cube that transformed into a full-sized, golden ship
  3. a magical spear -- Gungnir, which will always hit its mark, and always kill
  4. a golden boar that could move -- the battle-boar
  5. an arm ring that brings forth more rings
  6. Mjolnir, the hammer of the gods

According to Snorri Sturluson, those who die in battle are taken to Valhalla, while those who die of sickness or old age find themselves in Hel, the underworld, after their departure from the land of the living.
